The Life of a Canner

In New York, each redeemable bottle is worth 5 cents. Meet Josefa and Pedro, a canning couple who earn their living one nickel at a time.

The 1983 New York Bottle Bill requires distributors to pay 5 cents for each empty beverage container returned to them. Canners, who collect discarded empty bottles and cans from buildings, restaurants and the streets, number in the thousands. Over 800 of them sort their haul at Sure We Can, one of the last bottle redemption centers left in the city. The rising cost of rent has left the center facing eviction, after ten years in the community.
